About Us

Our Mission

Here at Sevans Wormery our mission is to convert food waste into useable fertilizer for homes and farms alike! By feeding red wiggler worms rotting organic material, we are turning trash into gold. Black gold to be precise! So before you throw away that rotten produce in the trash, remember to feed worms, not landfills!

The Man Behind the Worms

Sam Evans, Founder and Worm Enthusiast

Back in 2013, Sam was working in a restaurant when he was sick and tired of seeing how much food was being thrown away daily. All of the produce that wasn’t quite perfect or had begun to go bad would just be thrown into the trash to go rot in a landfill. He thought there had to be a better option for utilizing this food waste, so he began doing research. Along with composting, Sam discovered the red wiggler worm. These worms would actually eat the rotten food and plant matter and poop out a useful soil enhancer known as vermicompost, or black gold. Since he had recently started gardening, he decided to get some worms and try it out for himself. With 200 worms and some 5 gallon buckets he got for free from work, he started his first worm home.

Once he was able to harvest his first round of vermicompost, he was hooked. It was so rewarding to see the food that would have been garbage be transformed into something that was completely natural. That’s when it clicked. He knew what he wanted to do in life, and it was going to involve these worms. He was no longer satisfied with his one 5 gallon farm, so he began to expand. One farm turned into 3, which turned into 5 until he had over a dozen. Those 200 worms turned into thousands, and as they grew so didn’t the amount of food waste they ate. He was finally able to feel like he could maybe make a difference, and that’s when he decided to create Sevans Wormery with the help of his girlfriend, Jessica Casey.

Sam was always someone who was interested in sustainability, alternative energy and thriftful living, so it just felt right to be doing something that was beneficial to the planet. His vermicompost, worms and farms have helped him live a more sustainable life, so he wanted to pass that on to everyone else, and hopefully they would be able to see the benefit of feeding worms, not landfills!

The Woman with the Words

Jessica Casey, Co-Owner and Lover of Baby Worms

When her boyfriend first told her he wanted to start a worm farm, she was a bit skeptical. Would they be smelly? Would they take up a lot of space? Do they require a lot of work? She was no stranger to his sustainability efforts. He had been interested in renewable energy since high school, so it was no surprise to her that he wanted to try and do more for the environment. He was his own person, so he was going to start one whether she liked it or not.
They took some getting used to, but since she had recently started getting into gardening, she could begin to see the beauty in these creatures. At first the wiggling in the hands was a completely unique sensation that didn’t immediately grow on her, and the sifting was time consuming work. However, she could see how invested Sam was becoming in the worms. One farm turned into three, which turned into five, and they began to eat more and more food waste. They could both see how much of an impact these little worms could actually make in the world.
Sam mentioned wanting to start a business with the worms one day, and at first she wanted no part in it. It was one thing to have worms as a hobby, but it was completely different to try and make it your livelihood. She would of course support him and his idea, but the thought of trying to start a business was terrifying and completely out of their comfort zones. She went to school for creative writing and media studies, not business management.
However, once it came time to launch the business, she couldn’t resist helping any way she could. She began by writing the social media posts, and from there decided that she wanted to be apart of Sevans Wormery 100 percent. So with tenacity and a support from friends and family, the couple began a new adventure into trying to change the world, one worm at a time!
